Visiting Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland

Visiting Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland
Thinking of hiring a motor home to tour Northumberland. Then you will almost certainly have considered visiting Hadrian’s Wall, one of the UK’s greatest treasures.  As Britain’s greatest Roman monument, Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site runs for 150 miles from Arbeia at South Shields to Ravenglass on the Cumbrian coast.

There were once over 30 forts on the Roman frontier, including the original 16 on the line of the Wall, along with Milecastles, turrets, a ditch to the north and great Vallum earthwork to the south. Today you can visit a string of amazing forts and museums that stretch across the north of England, with the Wall itself visible at some major sites (such as Birdoswald) and at many other places in-between.

Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail is an unbroken 84 mile sign posted trail stretching from coast to coast, from Wallsend in the east to Bowness-on-solway in the west.  It passes through some of the most beautiful parts of England – from rolling fields and rugged moorland to the vibrant cities of Newcastle and Carlisle.

The beauty of motorhome  rental is that you can choose where and when you want to go visit the place of interest. And of course, you are not limited to any one place. Travel around the Northumberland coast, visit North Yorkshire, the Scottish Borders – in fact the go where you want, when you want.

Located close to the A1 motorway, Newcastle international airport and the DFDS ferry terminal, there has never been a better time to consider hiring that motor home. Camping and Caravanning Club News

Camping and Caravanning Club to run Forest Holidays Campsites
The Camping and Caravanning Club has reached an agreement with Forest Holidays to manage its campsites from 2011, which is great news for motorhome users in the UK.

The Club, which already has 110 Club Sites and almost half-a-million members, will be responsible for running the entire site operations, including reservations. Forest Holidays currently has 20 picturesque caravan and camping sites on Forestry Commission land in England, Scotland and Wales.

The Club, which holds a majority stake in Forest Holidays in a partnership with the Forestry Commission, has encouraged the company to independently develop both its holiday cabins and campsite businesses.

Director General Robert Louden said: “We believe the time is now right for the Club to manage the campsites, which will leave the Forest Holidays team free to concentrate on its rapidly expanding holiday cabin business. As part of the agreement, all campsites will retain the Forest Holidays identity.”

He added: “We have witnessed fantastic growth in both sides of the Forest Holiday business so it makes sense for The Club to lend its expertise in running campsites while development takes place in the cabin business.”

Gary Fletcher, CEO of Forest Holidays, added: “The Forest Holidays Board has agreed that the time is now right to focus and resource the Cabin business for future growth. We have exciting and innovative development plans ahead including the opening of our largest cabin site to date at the Forest of Dean and we are confident that with The Club’s expertise the camping business will continue to be equally successful in the future.”

Planning Your Trip

As it’s almost that time of year when we get the urge to get the motorhome out and plan where we would like to visit, we at Northumbria Motorhomes came across a great article that might help you plan where to go and what you can expect to be able to do when you get there.

The Practical Motorhome website is highlighting the www.wherecanwego.com website, a site that allows you to enter a postcode, or place, or region where you are planning a tour, and the time you are likely to be there.  The site then returns a series of events that are taking place on the dates you have chosen. You can specify indoor or outdoor events, and certain categories – for instance, ‘sport’, ‘gardens’, ‘animals’ or ‘festivals’. You can even choose to limit the results to free events.

The Practical Motorhome used an example postcode, located in the UK, and the site came back with hundreds of guided tours, shows and musical events. Something to suit every taste they claimed.  The site is worth using when you are planning your next tour, or if you have internet access while you are actually away in your ‘van.

To make sure your family or friends don’t miss out on an exciting motorhome adventure, book the holiday you desire and rest assured you’ll receive great quality and service from Northumbria Motor homes.

Light up Hadrian’s Wall

Plans to Light up Hadrian’s Wall
Looking for something to do this month. Then why not get into your motorhome and visit Northumbria. Why, well there are plans to create a line of light across England along the path of Hadrian’s Wall have been revealed.

As part of British Tourism Week in March 2010, the wall’s 84 mile (135 km) length will be illuminated by about 500 individual points of light.

The first will be lit at Wallsend on Tyneside, then make its way to Bowness-on-Solway in Cumbria an hour later. The event will be filmed by helicopter, and people will be able view the line from a number of stewarded points.

Linda Tuttiett, chief executive of Hadrian’s Wall Heritage Ltd, said: “In partnership with local people, we wanted to do something really quite extraordinary to bring to life Britain’s longest and greatest piece of heritage and celebrate the landscape of Hadrian’s Wall Country. “What could be more spectacular than a line of light that will stretch from coast to coast illuminating this stunning World Heritage Site?”

The event is being produced by John Farquhar-Smith who was the technical director for the eight-minute “handover ceremony” for London 2012 at the closing of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He said: “Our aim is to capture the public’s imagination with an event that will show the immense scale and beauty of Hadrian’s Wall and the countryside, villages, towns and cities that it runs through.”

Touring in a Motorhome

Touring in a Motorhome
One of the great appeals of the motorhome is that it offers the promise of holidays at all times of the year, from a weekend a few miles away to spending the summer months touring Europe.  And while touring with a motorhome can be an immense pleasure in itself, many people also their motorhome as a means to enhance their enjoyment of a favourite pastime or hobby.

A motorhome with the right storage combination can swallow all the golf, fishing, walking or photographic equipment you might like to take without having to compromise in the wardrobe department.  And, because you have all your facilities to hand, you can enjoy your pastime for longer, without the need to return home or leave in search for somewhere to get a meal. Special events such as airshows or music festivals can be enjoyed for whole weekends, starting as early and finishing as late as you like at relatively little expense in terms of accommodation.

Sounds attractive?  These are just some of the reasons why more and more people are taking control of their leisure time and enjoying the many benefits a motorhome offers.
